Very easy tool to use, even for a rookie.
It can sometimes seem intimidating picking up a tool that requires a smartphone app or use of a laptop (iOS or Windows). I learned pretty quickly this is something not only useful in diagnosing issues, but also making sure your dealership (if needed and you must take it in) isn’t screwing you.
All cars, trucks, SUVs, etc. will through what we call a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) error code. These codes will end up giving you the engine light on your dashboard. Everyone panics when they see the amber check engine light. We have all seen it before.
Today there are a multitude of OBD-II readers that will pair with your smartphone via an app, or it will have a small display on the actual tool, with buttons and menus to properly diagnose and advise on the remedy. Some scanners will even update your firmware, advise what may happen next, costs for parts, etc.
Under your steering wheel, usually all the way to the bottom right corner of your bottom dash area, where your brake pedal, gas pedal, just above is where you would normally see the OBD-II port, all cars have it, just look it up on Google to locate yours. Once you do so and you have finally picked up a scanner, go ahead and get it connected, follow the onscreen instructions. I prefer the built-in Wi-Fi scanners that work in conjunction with an app on your smartphone. Normally you keep the car in the ON position, not fully started. Once the scan completes, it will advise on any DTC codes, the proper remediation, the level of urgency. It can also advise on any recalls or important firmware updates for your PCM or ECU.
All in all, I highly recommend you pick one up, there are relatively cheap these days, there are even units that just work with a smartphone app.
